Questions About Your Septic System? Pt. 1

Writer's picture: Frontier Septic Frontier Septic

Theres a lot of things we think about day to day and us at Frontier Septic understand that your septic system is probably not at the top of your list. We're deciding to kick off this blog by starting with some common questions we get asked and the answers to them.

How often should I have my septic system pumped?

We recommend every 3-5 years - more or less depending on the household usage and size.

I'm in the process of selling my home - is it required to have septic inspection?

Yes. In Washington it is required to have an inspection done on the septic system for a real estate transaction. It's best to check with your local Board of Health or town hall since it may vary from town to town. Frontier Septic services King County and Pierce County, both counties require a septic inspection. An inspection is good for 6 months in Pierce County , and an inspection in King County is good for 12 months.

Why do I have more than one cover?

Majority of septic tanks have two to three covers, one in the center of the tank, one over the inlet side of the septic tank (where the water from your home enters the tank),and one on the outlet side of the tank (where the liquid from the tank exits to your leavch field). The inlet and the outlet covers will be exposed at the time of septic service to best inspect the inlet and outlet lines.

Is it okay to use a garbage disposal?

We don't recommend the use of a garbage disposal, chopped up food particles do not break down properly in the septic tank and can clog your leach field lines. Even the garbage disposals marked "septic safe" are not considered beneficial to your septic system.

im disgusted with your tank pumping. u pumped our tank 6 weeks ago. now my tank is full overtop not draining and convienently at this point unusable. to my amazment i dug up the drain side inspection cover and realized it had never been removed. one of your service people told me yesterday that post pumping both inspection lids are removed any sludge cleaned out and rinsed. in my case once i was able to remove it there was a foot and a half of sludge blocking the drain inlet and outlet... good job guys... this simple 475 dollar pump job that wound up being 850 dollars with no explaination. u wont come highly recammended. thanks Tom Swenson
